The film won Morita an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and produced cultural references such as the film’s “crane kick” move and the memorable “wax-on, wax-off” chores through which Miagi teaches Daniel. In a recent telephone call during a drive into New York City, Macchio spoke about what “The Karate Kid” has meant to his life and career. The show comes to Santander Performing Arts Center in Reading on Saturday, April 16.In “The Karate Kid,” Macchio portrayed Daniel Larusso, a New Jersey high school student who moves with his single mother to Reseda, Calif., where he runs afoul with bullies from the local Cobra Kai karate school. Miagi, an elderly Japanese apartment complex repairman, played by the late Pat Morita, teaches Daniel karate, leading to a pivotal scene in which he defeats the bullies to win the big karate tournament.I know that’s a big word, but you know what I mean … And it gives you an opportunity, even though these moves play on cable on television constantly, something nice about getting into that theater experience on the big screen.“And then for me, it offers a chance to share some anecdotal stories and things that you might not know of how they came to be. Everyone sort of goes back to their youth, or their time or whenever they saw the film for the first time and/or they’re bringing their kids to see it on the big screen for the first time. The fans looove it, ‘cause they get to hear nice stories, and I get to see that reaction.“It happened a couple years ago they had a screening, around the 30 anniversary of ‘The Karate Kid’ film, and the people … It was like watching the ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show.’ I mean, people, they know the lines. And then we did a panel – I came out at the end – and it was very rewarding. It’s not that I’m doing a big tour, but I’m popping here or there, and it’s just that it’s a nice giveback.”I saw online as I was preparing for this interview that at one event, you pointed out how [your character in “The Karate Kid”] Daniel Larusso wasn’t entirely blameless in all of what went on in the movie.“Right. “Listen, he was more defiant a character than I am.The fact that I look quasi-young for my age [laughs] and I always have sort of elongated [laughs] that sort of connection. It’s something that will be connected to me forever, regardless of what other work and other things I do.“And I don’t necessarily – obviously I want to diversify and it’s important to me to do new things and different things, but to also pay homage and respect to what sort of got me here and what I will be known for, first and foremost, is -- you want to be known for something good. I think he would probably carry on some of the legacy in the stuff that he learned from Mr. Because those are all – when you look at what he was taught, those are great life lessons.“And then sometimes I’m in these funny moods where I just say, you know, ‘He’s gone down a dark path. I should really think hard about the absolute story of Daniel Larusso, the adult. At least I can say I got that.”Here’s my dumb question of the interview: What do you think Daniel Larusso would be doing now? Then I have other ideas that I own – that he became very, very successful and owns a string of hotels, and occasionally the Cobra Kais come there and he gives them a free drink.”[Laughs]“You know, stuff like that. Talk about other stuff you’re doing: I read that you have a film that’s going to come out at some point: “Lost Cat Carona”?
